Welling United got off to the perfect start as two minutes into the match, Anointed Chukwu took on two Weston defenders and shot the ball in the bottom right corner which made it 1-0. In the 21st minute the Seagulls nearly responded, as Weston forward Nicholas McCootie’s shot was saved by Welling keeper Rhys Lovett and hit the crossbar. The visitors drew level as 23-year-old midfielder James Dodd crossed the ball to Reuben Reid whose header went past Lovett. Two minutes later the Wings conceded a penalty as the ball hit Dave Winfield's hand however, he was outside the box which made the Welling players and fans furious. Seagulls midfielder Luke Coulson then slotted the ball to the bottom right corner which made it 2-1. Weston seemed to have taken control of the tempo after Reid’s equaliser and had another shot on goal as Dodd’s shot went just wide of the post. An entertaining first half as Weston-Super-Mare took control after Welling was in control in the first 20 minutes of the first half.
The Wings had more possession in the beginning of the second half however the visitors were setup brilliantly at the back. In the 71st minute the Seagulls doubled the lead, as left back Billy Kirkman made a sublime pass to Coulson whose shot went between Lovett’s legs. It got heated towards the end of the match as in the 88th minute Welling were appealing for a penalty as Wings forward Martell Taylor-Crossdale was bundled over however the referee gave him a yellow for simulating.
Welling United manager Rob Stringer was furious with the referee's decision to award a penalty for Winfield’s handball arguing that it was outside the box and that decisions didn’t go their way. Stringer added that the new signing of Mitchel Bergkamp (son of Arsenal legend Dennis) could play a vital role this season, mentioned how he performed against Weston and added, “ We know what Mitchel can do but he’s gotta take time to bed in. A tough situation to come on at 3-1 down but I thought he did reasonably well”. The Wings next face Worthing on Tuesday while Weston-super-Mare face top of the table Hemel Hempstead on Saturday.
