May 19th Daily Update

Despite many football leagues being at a standstill, everyday I will bring updates of what is going on in football leagues around the world. The biggest leagues that have ended their season early is Ligue 1 in France and the Dutch. The Bundesliga is the biggest league that has resumed games.

  • England:  All Premier League teams have voted in favour of being able to train in small groups of five players starting from today. Teams have already been training but individually as Premier League chief executive Richard Masters hopes to resume the league on June 12th. The next step which is allowing regular training sessions with contact is at the moment set for next week. According to the Guardian, Premier League matches with fans may not happen until next year.
The Newcastle training ground is set for the players to return.

  • Italy:  The Serie A won't resume the season until at least June 14 as Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte confirmed yesterday that all sporting events and competitions will remain suspended. This announcement also meant that clubs can't start team training since yesterday clubs were expected to begin team training. Individual training began on May 4 for Serie A clubs.

  • Spain: Yesterday La Liga clubs have started training in groups of ten players. This is a huge step for Spanish clubs as La Liga president Javier Tebas stated, "The start of the next phase in La Liga's Return to Training protocol is another step towards the restarting of the competition''. La Liga clubs started with individual practice on May 4th. Tebas still hopes that the La Liga will be able to resume the 2019-2020 season on June 12.

  • Portugal: 
    • Primeira Liga (1st tier): 
      • As of May 12th the Primeira Liga will officially resume the 2019-2020 season on June 4th
      • The remaining 10 rounds of fixtures will be behind closed doors 
      • Porto and Benfica are currently fighting for the top spot.
    • Taça de Portugal Final
      • Porto vs Benfica
      • Exact date and time unknown however the final will happen
    • LigaPro (2nd tier):
      • Top two teams CD Nacional and Farense get promoted to the Primeira Liga since the 2019-2020 season for the LigaPro is declared finished.
      • However it is unsure that the leagues below will resume matches.
